Shared M: drive access - Faculty
This summer we are beginning a migration of our user data from the NetWare file system that we have used for nearly 15 years, to a Windows file system. This migration cannot be done for our entire user community at once, and will be a phased migration. In order for shared data to remain accessible to everyone during the migration, shared data will remain in its current file system until all users that access it have been migrated.
What this means for users is that user's home directory (H: drive) and departmental directories (J: drive ) will be migrated at one time, but directories which are shared outside of a department (K: drive, I: drive and M: drive) will be migrated together after all faculty, staff and students have been moved to the new system.
Students will be migrated between Spring and Summer semesters, and will be using the new file system for their home directories beginning May 11th. However, the drive used to share data between some faculty and students, the M: drive, will remain unchanged until the end of the migration (because of faculty migration dates and semester scheduling). These changes will be transparent when logging in to campus computers and labs. However, access will be changing for the new file system.
After May 11th, students needing to access their home directory will be using WebDAV to access their home directories. Directions for accessing files remotely via WebDAV can be found on OCCS's "Getting Connected" page at http://occs.odu.edu/gettingconnected/ . Since the shared, M: drive files are not migrating until after all faculty have been migrated, the shared M: drive files will need to be accessed by students via IUser.
Since the use of the M: drive is limited to faculty that have the specific requirement to share/setup files for their classes we are asking for your assistance in communicating this to students. If you could please pass this information to any classes you teach who use the shared M: drive so that they know they can continue accessing that data via IUser until the end of the migration.
If you have any questions or run into any problems with either the new H: drive access via WebDAV, or with the M: drive access via IUser, feel free to contact us at ADMigration@list.odu.edu so that we can assist with resolving the problem.
